Project description: Embolization is a therapeutic procedure involving the introduction of embolic agents (e.g., microspheres) into blood vessels in order to reduce or completely block the blood flow. This Hospitality Scholarships methodology has been widely used in clinics to treat a variety of conditions such as hypervascularised tumours and arteriovenous malformations. However, Hospitality Scholarships there still remain challenges to effectively use the embolization process for clinical applications. We Hospitality Scholarships propose to develop a microfluidic based system to mimic and quantitatively characterise the embolization performance of a range of selected microspheres which have currently been used in clinics.

The main objectives will include: (a) design and fabrication of micro devices with biomimetic micro vascular networks, (b) study of both mechanical and fluidic performances of microparticles in the physiological microenvironment, and (c) characterisation of embolization processes. Both experimental and computational (e.g., CFD) approaches will be employed in the study. This is a collaborative project involving industrial partners. It will be based in the School of Engineering Sciences, but with substantial interaction with the company involved.

The Fellowship is for five years, and provides:

Eligibility

The underlying philosophy in launching this fellowship is to facilitate global standards of scientific excellence in non-profit research institutes across India. Therefore, it is mandatory for interested applicants to relocate with a vision to lead a vibrant group of young scientists and collaborators.

Applicants should have demonstrated strong scientific leadership as independent investigators. In addition to significant contributions in research, applicants should have mentored young scientists and students, attracted extra mural funds from peer-reviewed competitive sources, established collaborations, successfully initiated programmes of advanced scientific research and importantly, maintained high ethical standards. Applicants would have to detail the reasons for leaving their current institution and how the proposed relocation will augment their scientific activities.

AMT builds on the long history of Leiden University in research and teaching on Asian traditions especially in the fields of religious studies, anthropology, philology, law and literature to explore the debates, disagreements, disjunctures and conflicts that prevail in Asia in the modern age. The global prominence of East Asia and the rapidly developing economies of South and Southeast Asia render Asia a key case for the study of the fashioning of modernities in everyday life, state practices and the global arena. AMT focuses on five themes:

Asia in the international system looks at global Asia, where the emergence of India and China as regional hegemons is reconfiguring issues of security and conflict
Power and limits of the Asian state focuses on the transformation of and challenges posed to the state in Asia
Asian debates on history and modernity explores Asia’s role in shaping the meaning of rationalism, nationalism, secularism, equality, justice and rights
New and old diversities in Asia looks at how Asia’s new modernities are being forged from the meeting of peoples, cultures, life-styles and ideologies
Production and flow of modern Asian cultures encompasses the movement of practices, styles, objects, fashions, media and the like that have come to exemplify the modern in particular places

Doctoral (Ph.D.) Fellowships

Ph.D. fellows are expected to conduct research leading to a Ph.D. thesis on a topic, country or region, and discipline relevant to AMT. The three fellowships are open in terms of research topic, disciplinary orientation and supervision by one of more members of senior academic staff at Leiden University who specialize in the study of Asia. We urge applicants carefully to consider the issue of supervision and contact one or more members of academic staff in Leiden (including the four coordinators of AMT Pieke, Otto, Spyer, Wickramasinghe) before submitting their application.

Tasks

Conducting original research on a topic relevant to AMT
Writing of a Ph.D. dissertation
Submitting research results for publication in peer-reviewed academic journals
Presenting papers at (international) conferences

Conditions of employment

The position of Ph.D. fellow is temporary for maximally four years of full-time appointment, and with an initial nine-month probationary period.
The salary is determined in accordance with the current scales as set out in the collective labor agreement for the Dutch universities (CAO):

The ILOT Award recognizes international students who demonstrate superior academic achievement, leadership skills, involvement in student affairs and community service, recognized achievement in fields of endeavour such as the performing arts, sports, debating or creative writing, or external academic competitions and examinations.

ILOT Award winners receive an award-level commensurate with their financial need as determined by the costs of their tuition, fees and living costs, minus the financial contribution the student and their family can make annually towards these costs. A standard needs-assessment is made, based on financial information provided by students and their families.

The ILOT Award can be renewed for up to three additional years of undergraduate study, or to degree completion, whichever is less, provided the student achieves satisfactory academic standing in their Faculty, continues to demonstrate financial need, and maintains their Canadian Study Permit (visa).

Am I eligible?

Award candidates must be nominated by their current school or college/university. To be considered for an ILOT Award you must:

be entering a UBC undergraduate degree program from a recognized secondary school, college or other university;
be admissible to the first* choice program you are applying to, including meeting UBC’s English Language Admission Standard;
have an excellent academic record (at least an “A” average or equivalent standard);

General information

Eleven (11) scholarships are available for PhD research in the fields covered by the strategic research areas of our Centre:Environment and Natural Resources Area , Food Quality and Nutrition Area, Genomics and Crop Biology Area. Job Description: Esthetician students will be eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship while attending school. These incentive scholarships will be awarded to students that demonstrate good performance in school as well as financial need.

Students who are attending American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS) member schools will each be awarded a $1,000 scholarship provided by Sport Clips. A selection committee comprised of Sport Clips Area Developers, Team Leaders and SCI Support Team Members will review all eligible applications. There is no limit to the number of applicants from a member school but there will be a limit of one scholarship recipient chosen from an individual school per year for this program.

DAAD Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists: Singapore

Research grants provide young foreign academics and scientists with an opportunity to carry out a research project or a course of continuing education and training at a German higher education institution or non-university research institute. Research grants can be used to carry out:

• research projects at a German higher education institution for the purpose of gaining a doctorate in the home country (this includes the doctoral programmes offered for developing and transformation countries under the "DAAD Sandwich Model" – see www.daad.de/extrainfo);

• research projects at a German university for the purpose of gaining a doctorate in Germany; for projects of these kinds, we would particularly refer to the structured doctoral study programmes, such as Research Training Groups or Doctoral Research Groups, International Postgraduate Programmes, Graduate Schools, Max Planck Research Schools, etc. Please go to the following website for further information: http://www.daad.de/ipp;

• research projects or continuing education and training, but without aiming for a formal degree/qualification.

Duration

The length of the grant is set by the grant committee at the selection session. Depending on the project in question and on the applicant's work schedule, grants can be paid generally for between one and ten months, in the case of full doctoral programmes in Germany for up to three years, and in exceptions for up to a maximum of four years.

Support can only be provided for the completion of a full doctoral programme in Germany when special support policy reasons exist. Such reasons include, for example, the lack of comparable research or academic supervision opportunities in the home country or when the doctoral topic requires several years of research in Germany.

Support for full doctoral programmes in Germany is based on a programme length of three years; if foreign graduates first have to qualify for admission to a doctoral programme, grants can be awarded for a period of four years. Even when support has been awarded for a full doctoral programme, that award will initially be limited to a maximum of one year. Extensions then depend on whether or not the evaluation finds the previous award period to have been successfully completed.

Amount Awarded

Depending on the award holder's academic level, the DAAD will pay a monthly award of 715 euros (graduates holding a first degree), 795 euros (doctoral candidates) or 975 euros (doctoral candidates with at least two years' academic work experience). As a rule, the scholarship additionally includes certain payments towards health insurance cover in Germany. Furthermore, the DAAD generally will pay an appropriate flat-rate travel allowance, unless the costs are covered by the home country or by another funding source.

Award holders completing a stay of more than six months receive a study and research allowance plus, where appropriate, a rent subsidy and family allowance. Funding for attendance of a language course is decided on a case-by-case basis (cf. Requirements).

When award holders take doctoral programmes run under the "DAAD Sandwich Model", the award may include the travel expenses of an academic supervisor - as long as this was already applied for in the first application.

Eligible Candidates

Applications for DAAD research grants are open to excellently-qualified university graduates who hold a Diplom or Master's degree at the time they commence the grant-supported research and, in exceptional cases, graduates holding a Bachelor's degree or already holding a doctorate/PhD (post-docs).

It is required that doctoral candidates wishing to take a doctorate/PhD in their home country will already have been admitted to an appropriate course at their home university.

The application papers must generally include written confirmation of academic supervision by a professor in Germany and expressly refer to the applicant's project, thereby confirming that the host institute will provide a workplace. If the applicant is planning to complete a doctorate at the German host university, the letter of confirmation must come from the academic supervisor (Doktorvater/Doktormutter) for the applicant's doctoral programme/thesis.

Applicants who intend to gain their doctorate within the scope of a structured doctoral study programme are required to present a letter of admission from their study programme or at least proof that they are being considered for admission.

Besides previous study achievements, the most important selection criterion is a convincing and well-planned research or continuing education and training project to be completed during the stay in Germany and which has been coordinated and agreed with an academic supervisor at the chosen German host institute.

German language skills are generally required, although the required level also depends on the applicant's project and topic, as well as on the available opportunities for learning German in the applicant's home country. In the natural sciences and in engineering disciplines, in particular, and when English is spoken at the host institute, proof of good English language skills may also be accepted. The DAAD decides on a case-by-case basis whether the applicant can attend a German language course before beginning the research grant (free of charge for the award holder). This option is only available for research grants lasting more than six months.

The award of DAAD research grants for doctoral candidates and young academics and scientists is subject to an age limit for applicants of 32.

Within the NWO funded project ‘Articulating Modernity: the Making of Popular Music in 20th Century Southeast Asia and the Rise of New Audiences’.

This is a joint project with the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) and the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation (NIOD). The project analyzes the interplay between the production of popular music, the articulation of modernity, and the emergence of new audiences, lifestyles and related processes of social differentiation in 20th century (pen)insular Southeast Asia. We focus on decisive historical junctures where technological innovation, human agency, the consumption of new musical styles and the rise of new audiences came together within particular Southeast Asian urban localities. Two senior researchers have been appointed within the project to study the jazz age (1920-1950s) and Islamic popular music in the digital era (1990s-2000s). There is one PhD position available.

The PhD project advertised covers the period from the 1950s to 1970s. The regional focus is on Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand or the Philippines. We ask candidates to focus on pioneering artists and producers and to explain their emergence within their particular urban context, the kind of audiences the artists addressed, the new genres they created and how their music was disseminated through live performances, vinyl records, audio cassettes and radio broadcasts.

Candidates are expected to have:

•a MA , MPhil or MSc degree in the Social Sciences or Humanities with excellent results;

•a good command of English and proficiency in a Southeast Asian language;

•Outstanding research qualities manifest in a high-quality MA thesis or equivalent;

•Ability and willingness to carry out empirical research and spend extended periods abroad;

Terms of employment

A successful applicant will be appointed as promovendus for a period of one year with an extension of three years after positive evaluation of capabilities and compatibility.

The gross monthly salary will be in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities for academic personnel, and will range from € 2.042, - per month in the first year, gradually rising to € 2.612,- in the final year.

This organization promotes a green environment through vegetarianism & provides financing for a higher education to high school graduates through their VRG vegetarian scholarship program. Every year the award of $5000 each is given to two graduating US high school students who would have encouraged vegetarianism in their schools or/and communities.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
The VRG is a non-profit organization committed and dedicated to educate the community and society about vegetarianism and the related issues of health, environment, nutrition, ecology, ethics and other topics. A Vegetarians diet would not consist of meat, chicken, fish, beef or pork, but rather anything else but meat. The organization does market the benefits of being vegetarian – better health through lower BMI, lower cholesterol level & longer average life expectancy are some of them.

The organization provides distinct services for activists, non-profit organizations, businesses, member services, better ecological footprints and nutrition education. “Vegetarian Journal”, cooking tips and recipes are some the means it uses to serve the vegetarian community. It also promotes ideas as “Vegetarian Family” and “Veg Teens”.

APPLICATION PROCESS
The application procedure for the VRG scholarships for vegetarians is pretty simple as no pre-printed form is necessary for the same. The applicant needs to fill some specific information as asked by the organization on one neat paper. Below is the information to be covered in the application.

CLOSURE NOTE
As per a 2009 study nearly 3% of US adult population is vegetarian with 15% students of the total US population as never having meat at all. The organization is aiming to have a healthy environment & eco-system and the best step forward is to educate the people about the benefits.
